Standard Deviation

Standard Deviation explores how ideas change as they move through systems of repetition, copying and interpretation.

Many of the works draw on the visual language of psychological and aptitude tests—diagrams, puzzles and scoring systems designed to measure intelligence and establish a norm from which deviation can be calculated. These instruments treat intelligence as a fixed quantity belonging to an individual mind: something that can be isolated, quantified and ranked.

In the exhibition these structures become starting points rather than conclusions.

Images are repeated in sequences, copied by different hands, translated across languages, or rearranged into new configurations. A painting becomes the model for another painting. A test produces an unexpected answer. Instructions shift meaning as they pass through translation. With each step the work moves slightly away from its source.

Through these processes the exhibition suggests a different way of thinking about mind and intelligence. Rather than belonging to a single individual, intelligence appears here as something shifting and collective—formed through circulation, interpretation and context.

Deviation, in this sense, is not simply distance from a norm. It is the movement through which intelligence emerges.
